A professora do Ensino Primário no Estado Novo: da mulher à funcionária pública

O estudo A professora do Ensino Primário no Estado Novo tem como objectivo
estudar o lugar ocupado pela mulher na escola do ensino primário numa parte do
período de governação de Oliveira Salazar.
Inicia-se o trabalho por uma perspectiva histórica, ainda que breve, do ensino
primário e sua evolução no contexto da ideologia vigente. Seguidamente, foi
feita uma abordagem ao número crescente de mulheres no ensino durante este
período, a sua carreira bem como a sua imagem aos olhos da sociedade. Para além
da apresentação dos deveres e das funções atribuídas à professora como
profissional e como educadora, algumas destas mulheres ainda tiveram
oportunidade de desenvolver a sua actividade redactorial na revista Escola
Portuguesa. Este é o objectivo do Capítulo III desta dissertação de Mestrado.
A problemática deste trabalho incide essencialmente na formação que a mulher
tinha para ser professora e simultaneamente na sua preparação para ser esposa,
mãe e dona de casa. Ao contemplar estas vertentes, a formação que a mulher
recebia tinha também como objectivo a transmissão dos ideais políticos do
Estado Novo. Em termos comparativos, pelas suas qualidades pessoais e
profissionais, muitas destas mulheres foram homenageadas particular e
publicamente, sendo condecoradas com a Ordem da Instrução Pública na cerimónia
oficial que contava com a presença do Presidente da República e das mais
importantes entidades públicas que representavam o Estado português. Esta
cerimónia realizava-se anualmente no dia 10 de Junho, Dia da Raça, actualmente
Dia de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas.
Foram trabalhadas fontes primárias e outros estudos secundários. Das fontes
documentais utilizadas neste trabalho salientam-se alguns documentos oficiais,
guardados no arquivo Histórico do Ministério da Educação, bem como alguma
imprensa escrita da época, da qual de destacam os vários jornais diários e a
revista Escola Portuguesa, da responsabilidade da Direcção Geral do Ensino
Básico.

The primary school female teacher of the Estado Novo: from woman to public
employee
The study The primary school female teacher of the New State has the objective
of studying the place she occupied in the primary school during part of the
Oliveira Salazar government.
The investigation starts on an historic perspective, even if brief, of the
primary school years and it's evolution in the context of the ideology in
force. Following, an inquiry was made to the increasing number of women
teaching during this period as well as her career and image in the eyes of the
society. Besides the obligations and duties conferred to the teacher as a
professional and teacher, some of these women got the opportunity to develop
their editorial activity in the magazine Escola Portuguesa. This is the
objective of Chapter III in the master's dissertation.
The problematical falls essencially upon the formation the female received to
become a teacher and simultaneously on her preparation to become wife, mother
and housewife.
On contemplating these perspectives, the formation the woman received, her
objective was also to transmit the political ideals of the New State. On
comparative terms for her personal and professional qualities many of these
women were privately and publicly homageg and condecorated with the Order of
Public Instruction in an official ceremony which counted with the presence of
the President of the Portuguese Republic and of some of the most important
public entities representing the Portuguese state. This ceremony was held
annually on June 10, Race Day " Dia da Raça", presently Camões Day
and Portuguese Community.
Primary sources as well as secondary studies were researched. From all
documented sources used for this study the emphasis is on official documents,
kept in the historic archives of the Ministry of Education as well as press
written at that time, where the daily newspapers and the magazine Escola
Portuguesa stand out which was of the responsibility of the Primary School
Directory.
