O Professor Liceal Oitocentista.
profissionalização docente do ensino liceal.
This study aims to be a contribution for the analysis of the historical process
of the teaching profession at the Secondary level. In this way it represents a
double purpose; on the one hand it trys to follow the emergence and slow
beginning of the teaching career, and on the other it trys to understand if we
can talk about a teaching career during the XIX century.
The legislative evolution concerning the teaching career is the starting point
of the investigation. An analysis of the principal basis laws of the Secondary
level of teaching in the eighteenth century was carried out. Because law not
always represents he actual practice, we investigated the actual reactions to
the law among their protagonists. In this way we analysed several different
types of essays and different written documents, most of which have been little
or never studied.
This research was carried out at The National Archive of Torre do Tombo and at
the National Library of Lisbon.
It was found that collective rules were followed by individuals as well as the
existence of different knowledge related to the activity in order to enforce
the professional standard. Teachers fulfilled their professional objectives, at
least half had higher qualifications and most of them knew the new pedagogical
theories used at the time.
The public exams required to be admitted into a Secondary level teaching career
were the professional qualifications to teach at this teaching level. They were
also essential so that the professional group could control the entrance into
this career by selecting professionals. As colleagues the Secondary teachers
rejected all those individuals who were not able to get into the
"career" though public selection. Therefore, we defend the opinion
that there was a slight corporationism group among the class.
This class of Secondary teachers, besides being poorly paid, was a privileged
class due to their independent, permanent and impunity standards. In
conclusion, we can say that the professional class under study grew during the
XIX century but did not have a linear progress, rather series of advancements
and retreats. The liberal State contributed to their professional identity, but
at the same time to their "deprofessionalization".
