comum.
The geographic space. Learning strategies related to the geographical concepts
and the construction of this knowledge by students
Although research shows the importance of the role of learning strategies for
students' improvement, in Brazil studies about this subject are still few. The
aim of this research has been to investigate how the 6th- and 7th- grade
students from Ensino Fundamental [Basic Education] at the São José
Educational Center, acquire the geographic concepts and their uses in their
daily lives in the classroom.
This work was developed based on the methodological options related to the
interpretative paradigm, on a qualitative approach of research in education
based on the ethnographic method. The tools used were: semi-structured
interview, questionnaire, activity, participative observation and analysis of
documents.
The results indicated that reading, copying and responding to exercises, being
attentive, getting community help, interpretative reading and writing, non-
interpretative reading and writing, association, confection and underlining are
the learning strategies the students use in the classroom to learn the
geographic concepts. These strategies are efficient for the kind of teaching
that is being done. Nevertheless, considering theses studies, it can be assumed
that the students observed in the research only deal with a large part of the
concepts and thinking processes implied in the study of the subjects in a
mechanical way, without being able to internalize them. Consequently, when
requested to talk freely about the content they have been studying, they are
unable to express concepts and relations acquired in their systematic study,
but they can recite what has been apprehended through the daily practice based
on the common sense.
