No âmbito da problemática da construção social da escola para todos, o presente
estudo procurou caracterizar e compreender o processo de formação e
desenvolvimento do Externato António Sérgio, uma instituição educativa privada,
situada no Baixo Alentejo. Esta instituição teve a sua génese no início dos
anos 60, altura em que se tornava particularmente visível a crescente procura
social de educação de nível secundário que, não tendo enquadramento nas escolas
públicas, foi encontrando resposta na rede de ensino particular que então se
espalhava pelo território nacional.
Adoptando uma abordagem que privilegia as experiências e as vivências dos
indivíduos, reveladas nos seus testemunhos, procurou-se perceber as
circunstâncias que, numa comunidade rural, determinaram a procura da educação e
a mobilização que se constituiu para lhe poder dar resposta e, ainda,
compreender de que modo se foram articulando, ao longo de cerca de trinta anos,
a instituição escolar nas suas diferentes fases, a comunidade em que esta se
inseria e o discurso político e legislativo nacional relativo à educação. A
pesquisa sobre a instituição escolar constituiu-se também como situação
potenciadora de uma reflexão mais geral sobre a política e o desenvolvimento
educativos e a própria mudança social.
Externato António Sérgio. The creation and development of an educational
institution in Alentejo (1960-1990)
Concerning the issue of the social construction of the school for all, the
present study has attempted to characterize and contribute to the understanding
of process leading to the creation and development of the private school
Externato António Sérgio, which is located in Baixo-Alentejo. This institution
was established in the early 1960s, when the increasing social demand for
education at the secondary level became particularly visible, which by not
being met by the public schools, gave rise to a response from a network of
private schools scattered all over the country.
Using an approach mostly based on the experiences of the individuals, obtained
from their oral testimony, the work analyses the circumstances that, in a rural
community, determined the search for education and the mobilization that was
set into motion in order to respond to this. Furthermore, taking the history of
about thirty years of the private school into account, this work also describes
the relation, in its different phases, with the community and with the national
policies regarding education.
The research on this institution also provided data that were able to provide
the basis for a wider analysis of the policy and educational development, as
well as the social change itself.
